The Craft of Writing: Beyond Frivolity and Misunderstanding

By Janis Patterson

As I sit here grappling with an impending deadline for my latest book, I find myself at a crossroads. At this moment, I can't quite discern whether to feel flattered, insulted, or simply sorry for the state of my writing process.

The struggle is real. Despite outlining my characters and plotting their paths, they refuse to behave as planned, making my task feel even more daunting. The frustration of trying to harness their fictional lives into a cohesive narrative leaves me feeling unsettled, wishing for a bit of moral support to help me through.

The Need for Support

In search of encouragement, I reached out to a fellow writer—a friend whose opinion I value. But instead of the empathetic response I hoped for, I was met with an airy laugh and a flippant remark: “Oh, that’s nothing. You’ll get something together to get it done. You always do.” The conversation swiftly pivoted to her granddaughter’s upcoming wedding, complete with plans for a lavish party and punch recipes.

While I share her joy for her granddaughter’s special moment, in that instant, I craved solidarity, not decorations. To casually brush aside the complex emotional and creative labor of writing as if it were akin to baking or planning a party felt like a profound insult—not just to my efforts but to the very nature of the craft itself.

Writing as an Art Form

Writing is often misperceived as an easy endeavor, particularly among those outside the literary realm. This misconception traces back to the early days of romance writing when the tropes of glamorous ease were prevalent. Many believed authors lounged luxuriously, pen in hand, churning out bestsellers in between extravagant social events.

Exaggerated, yes—but with a kernel of truth that still haunts our industry today. Even during casual conversations, it’s not uncommon to hear dismissive comments suggesting that writing is simple or effortless. The reality, however, paints a different picture. Writing is laborious and requires a significant investment of time and energy. Relegating the process to mere "frivolity" undermines the dedication it demands.

The Realities of the Craft

Let me clarify: even crafting a subpar book requires hard work, but producing a quality story is a monumental challenge. It’s an art form that requires meticulous attention to detail, creativity, and emotional investment. To approach the task lightly, saying things like, “That’s nothing; you’ll manage,” is not just belittling; it’s diminishing the complex essence of writing itself.

Your words must convey coherence and meaning, creating a narrative that resonates with readers. Anyone can string words together, but crafting a true book is a meticulous endeavor that melds countless ideas into a compelling tapestry. Writers meticulously select each word to carve out the world of their story, setting the right tone and subtext to draw readers in.

Connecting with Readers

The ultimate test of a writer’s craft lies in their ability to connect with an audience they’ve never met—to compel readers who may have never heard of them before to dive into the worlds they’ve created. And let’s be fair: that’s no small feat. To trivialize the process of achieving this connection as something that can be easily accomplished diminishes the struggle and dedication that lie behind every page.

So, when writers seek support and understanding from fellow creatives or friends, it’s vital to recognize that what may seem like a “simple task” from the outside is anything but. Emphasizing the hard work that goes into every chapter is crucial to appreciating writing as a legitimate craft rather than dismissing it as a pastime or a hobby.

Ending on a Thoughtful Note

And now, as I channel this frustration into my writing, I return to the task that lies ahead. The characters may be whimsically resistant, and the ideas scattered, but that’s part of the process. It’s a nuanced dance of creativity and persistence, one that every writer navigates daily.

In this dialogue about writing, it’s important to cultivate a culture that respects the effort and emotion behind the craft. Let’s commit to honoring the artistry of storytelling, understanding that behind every book is a journey filled with hard work, dedication, and a passion for words.
