Exploring the Creative Process: How Personal Experiences Shape Writing

Once again, it’s time for a snapshot of the writing process, and this one comes straight from the heart. “Write what you know” is not just a cliché; it’s a principle I’ve embraced wholeheartedly throughout my journey as a storyteller. Recently, I've drawn inspiration from my life as I continue to develop my work-in-progress (WIP) titled Dragons Walk Among Us. In this tale, I’ve taken cues from my experience as a hobbyist photographer to develop characters and settings that resonate.

In a recent phase of my writing, I also tackled a ghost story set in a fictional high school called Pinedale, where I blended elements of my own experiences and observations. The character Zuri was born from my admiration of youth sports, which I've come to know well. Now, as I pivot towards crafting the Vampire Dragon narrative, I find myself returning to familiar grounds—the world of competitive soccer.

Personal Connections to Soccer

Many readers may already be familiar with my passion for soccer. My sons are active competitive players, and I’ve watched both my older son excel on the field. My own soccer background, while less illustrious, provides me with insights into youth soccer culture. This knowledge may not position me as an expert per se, but it certainly equips me with a deeper understanding than the average bear.

Incorporating athletics into a fantasy narrative about vampires and dragons might seem unconventional, but here's the thing: I believe it can enhance the story's relatability and vibrancy. With the recent success of major soccer events like the World Cup, soccer fever is gracing many parts of the U.S. right now, making it an opportune time to weave this sport into my storytelling fabric.

The Setting and Characters

In the Vampire Dragon WIP, soccer serves as an anchor for the core characters: Robbie, Lucas, Bridget, and Quinn, who embark on a trip from Seattle to San Diego for the fictitious SoCal Invitational Soccer Tournament. This tournament setting is based on my firsthand experiences attending similar events, which have their own unique blend of excitement and competition.

Two boys compete for a soccer ball on a grassy field, one in black Valor jersey and one in gray Everett shirt, focused and intense.

Through this lens, I’ve been able to vividly capture the essence of youth soccer tournaments—complete with strategic discussions, team gatherings, and casual moments shared between players. Robbie and Lucas, the protagonists, engage not only in soccer gameplay but also navigate through their experiences gathered during these tournaments, from college tours to dinners, guiding them through both personal and groundbreaking challenges.

The Bigger Picture

Amidst the backdrop of a sports tournament, my characters stumble upon eerie happenings—rumors of an alien invasion or perhaps even local wildlife wreaking havoc. This additional layer adds intrigue and explores themes that resonate beyond the field while allowing character growth through ordinary yet significant experiences.

Robbie, especially, is shaped by his soccer-driven environment, reflecting the pressure to excel and the dreams that youth athletes nurture. This personal angle brings authenticity to his character, showcasing the complexities that arise from balancing ambition with the joy of the game.

What to Take Away

Writing what you know can serve as fertile soil for cultivating rich narratives. It’s about intertwining personal experiences with imagination, thereby creating a more profound connection for readers. As I move forward with my WIP, I’ll continue to mine my interests and knowledge spaces—whether it’s soccer, photography, or any aspect of life's tapestry—allowing these insights to influence and enrich my storytelling.

This approach not only adds authenticity to character development but also encourages potential readers to engage with the narrative on multiple levels. The ability to bridge the familiar with the extraordinary has always been a thrilling endeavor for writers, and I look forward to sharing my progress as the Vampire Dragon project unfolds.
